How to Support the Kids of Bayview this Juneteenth
Juneteenth is approaching and we are preparing to remind our youth of why we must celebrate its significance. Marked as the day in 1865 when the remaining enslaved people were freed in Galveston, Texas, we’d like to point out how recent 1865 really is. Profound change has occurred to say the least, yet the remnants of slavery pervade the current lives of Black families. Forms of modern-day slavery, systems for health, housing, and society, poverty, and the political vestige from Southern states–it is no secret that work still needs to be done. Our neighborhood at City of Dreams is home to the highest percentage of Black people in San Francisco, making about 21% of SF’s Black population. Three out of every 10 residents is under 24 years old, meaning we have a vulnerable demographic to account for when we prioritize uplifting these kids. The kids grow up with the high likelihood of mainstream isolation due to the generational poverty that has restricted much of the community from societal participation. For this reason, we value teaching our kids about history and its implications in their lives now. By celebrating the momentous event that is Juneteenth, we hope to place profound value on the successes and celebrations of Black communities.
