National Nonprofit Day 2022

City of Dreams believes in sustaining and empowering the autonomy of Black and Brown families in poverty.  The district we serve is enveloped in generations of scarcity and distress of this exact demographic.  Bayview Hunters-Point has a history replete with traumatized children that are now adults–these adults have had children and the cycle remains.  The dwelling trauma of scarcity and violence is exactly what we strive to address with our programs and promising expansion.  The youth of Bayview deserve to live through their childhoods with happiness, health, and healing.  We exist as a nonprofit for Bayview youth’s improved quality of life.

How do we do this? It is more than just our established programs, but the connections we make with the community, the friendships we have cultivated with other organizations who thus influence the wellness of our kids, and the resilience of the kids who trust us enough to come to us outside of the programs to seek support.

What are the programs we have chosen to accomplish this?

Mentorship. This program was created to enrich the perspectives and aspirations of the kids through positive adult presence.  Our mentors bring a multitude of backgrounds (some of which are similar to the kids), careers, personalities, interests, and spirits to the kids who are more often than not isolated from the world outside of Bayview.  To learn about us and mentorship, see here.

Super Saturdays.  Field trips to us are more than occasional experiences outside of the norm.  We believe in their power to strengthen the youth’s understanding of the world, how it works, the fun of life, and the opportunities out there for them.  This program ensures that our kids go on at least two new experiences per month.  To learn more about Super Saturdays, visit the Super Saturdays program page.

Earn2Learn. We are proud and humbled by the garden our kids and the community sustain.  The program focuses on Gardening and Wellness by connecting to nature, practicing mindfulness, and learning healthy habits for living.  The kids learn financial literacy through stipends earned through participating in the program.  The garden is also maintained by volunteers who see the light in our kids.  To sponsor, volunteer, or to just learn about our garden, visit the Earn2Learn program page.

Ground Zero. As the kids grow up, we aim to continue our support towards their wellness.  This program serves the young adults of Bayview, those who are facing difficult and uncomfortable realizations.  Our program facilitators are trained life coaches who answer their questions without judgment and orient the youth towards methods for success in livelihood, academics, and career development. To sponsor or learn more about Ground Zero, visit the Ground Zero program page.

Do you have to donate money to be involved with City of Dreams?

No! We offer various ways to get involved with us including: volunteering in our garden, becoming a mentor, becoming a Board Member, partnering with us through your company or hobby, connecting us with resources that could benefit the kids, donating food and essentials to our site, or simply sharing us with your networks.

We are celebrating National Nonprofit Day by advocating for our kids and the community that has embraced us.  To view the impact of our previous year, and understand why we persist for this community, see our 2021 Impact Report.  We do not serve an entire city, state, nor do we have the resources to go nationwide; but we know we can shift the trajectory of this neighborhood in need.  Happy National Nonprofit Day!
